Newcastle United 5 Leeds United 2

Mighty Micky Quinn certainly made an impact on his Newcastle United debut back in 1989. The new arrival from Portsmouth bagged four goals on the opening day of the season to help give the Magpies a 5-2 victory against Leeds United at St James Park.

The striker went on to become the league top goal scorer, registering 39 goals in all competitions which helped Jim Smith’s side challenge for promotion. Defeated Leeds United eventually got revenge by taking the league title with Sheffield United taking the final automatic promotion ahead of Newcastle. The Toon promotion hopes were ended when they lost to local rivals Sunderland in the play-offs.

“He’s fat, he’s round, he’s worth a million pound, Micky Quinn, Micky Quinn!”
