In Germany, his nickname was ‘flipper’ which is translated in deutsch is pinball machine due to his quick feet and boundless energy on the pitch. When he arrived in England, the tabloid newspapers labelled him ‘Der Dive Bomber’ for his reputation for being theatrical under a challenge but it wasn’t long before he won over the Spurs fans and British press with an impressive 30 goal haul in his first season which won him the Football Writers player of the year award. At international level the talented striker won the World Cup in 1990 and the European Championships in 1996 for Germany.
