Ron Atkinson’s Red Devils took a two goal first half lead into the half time break courtesy of a screamer from Colin Gibson and a spot kick from Gordon Strachan. In the second half the tables turned and Clive Wilson pulled one back for the Sky Blues before Arthur Albiston scored one of the best own goals every witnessed on a derby day with just eight minutes remaining to share the points between the two Manchester sides.
