Chelsea’s first taste of European success came in 1971 when they beat the mighty Real Madrid in the European Cup Winners Cup final. Peter Osgood scored the vital goal in the replay for Dave Sexton’s Blues to give them a 2-1 victory. Along the way Chelsea had previously dispatched Aris FC, CSKA Sofia, Club Brugge before meeting cup holders Manchester City in the semi-finals.
