Super Cup Final 1982

The 1982/83 Super Cup final was a highly anticipated clash between Aston Villa, the reigning European Cup champions, and Barcelona, winners of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Barcelona took a first leg lead from the Camp Nou courtesy of a goal from Marcos Alonso. However, Aston Villa responded strongly in the return leg at Villa Park and equalised through Gary Shaw with 10 minutes remaining on the clock. The match remained deadlocked until the final whistle but in extra time Gordon Cowans and Ken McNaught scored the winning goals for Aston Villa, securing a thrilling 3-1 victory. This triumph marked Aston Villa’s first and only Super Cup title, cementing their place in football history.
