Oh Ah Paul McGrath

Paul McGrath’s time at Villa Park is remembered as one of the most illustrious periods in Aston Villa‘s history. Joining the club in 1989 from Manchester United, McGrath quickly became a defensive stalwart, earning the nickname “God” from the Villa faithful for his imperious performances. Despite battling chronic knee issues that often kept him from training, McGrath’s reading of the game, composure on the ball, and unmatched bravery made him a cornerstone of the team. His contributions were pivotal in Villa’s second-place finish in the inaugural Premier League season in 1992-93 and their League Cup triumphs in 1994 and 1996. McGrath’s extraordinary talent was recognized with the PFA Player of the Year award in 1993, a rare honor for a defender, solidifying his legacy as one of Villa’s greatest ever players.
